There is more than one route on healing the body during a bout of diverticulitis.  And when some or all of the basic symptoms of tenderness, pain, fever, alternating bouts diarrhea and constipation begin to arise, there are alternatives to consider aside from a pharmaceutical prescription.
During a mild diverticulitis attack follow a low fiber or clear liquid diet, see our diet during an attack for food and menu suggestions.  This will give the colon time to rest and heal and the infection to clear up.  Once the symptoms are cleared up begin back on a low fiber diet and gradually work your way up to a high fiber diet to help protect and heal the intestines.

There are 5 actions that need to be addressed during an attack and Wild Yam is most useful specific on the list.

Anti Inflammatories:  Helps to ease inflammation in the colon.

  • Wild Yam
  • Peppermint

Anti Spasmodics:  Alleviates the abdominal pain and cramping associated with diverticulitis

  • Wild Yam
  • Peppermint
  • Cramp Bark

Carminatives:  Helps to ease flatulence distress.

  • Peppermint
  • Valerian

Anti Microbials:  The bases for assisting the body deal with infections that occur.

  • Garlic

Nervines:  Help relieve the stress, both mind and body, that can be an underlying effect of the condition.

  • Peppermint
  • Valerian

A prescription solution to consider:
     2 parts    Wild Yam
     1 part     Cramp Bark
     1 part     Valerian
1 Part     Peppermint   (total 1 part of tincture to 5ml, 3 times a day)

Throughout the day slowly sip and an infusion of peppermint or matricaria.   One fresh garlic clove a day should be added into the diet, if that is not possible than a garlic capsule supplement can be taken.

Keep in mind that the general elimination of this problem in the colon will require some support for the liver and kidneys, and a little assistance to the nervous system.  Extra care has to also be taken to not use astringent herbs and bring on any constipation.

It is always strongly advised to seek medical consultation on any diagnosis, condition, and healing game plan.  You want to be assured that the proper treatment plan is being followed to avoid any further complications.  If an acute diverticulitis attack is not healed properly it can lead to severe complications including ruptures, abscesses, bleeding, fistulas, all in which could require surgery.
